Prevention of Violence Against Children and Youth in Cyprus– 19 Days of Activism

"Hope For Children" CRC Policy Center condemning any form of violence and abuse against children, is implementing again this year the “19 Days of Activism” campaign on the prevention of abuse and violence against children and young people in Cyprus with Hellenic Bank as this year’s campaign Partner & Supporter.

The 19 Days of Activism is an initiative established by Women's World Summit Foundation launched in 2011, aiming to apply a strategy to combat at least 1 out of the 19 types of abuse and violence against children (among them bullying, child labor, sexual abuse, child abduction, neglection etc). The National campaign’s duration is from November 1st until November 19th and aims to raise awareness to people and prevent the issue of abuse and violence against children and youth, through several activities and actions.

Within the frame of the campaign, local radio stations will be promoting through their radio producers, key messages of the campaign and information about the types of violence against children and where the children can address asking for help.

Through the activities taking place, Hope For Children raises the issue of abuse and violence against children and youth in general. This is a worldwide phenomenon that violates their healthy development, taking place in all aspects from their home to the judicial procedures.

Child abuse appears in all levels, within the family environment, at school, at work, through the judicial procedures and in the society. Is defined as any form of violence performed on children, including neglection, sexual abuse or psychological violence from their guardian or someone who has power on them and whom the children trust (WHO, 1999).

"Hope For Children" CRC Policy Center implements programs concerning the support and rehabilitation of children victims and their families, including support helplines. It is extremely important that all relevant and interested parties establish mechanisms for the prevention, protection and rehabilitation of children who are victims of any form of violence and programs for the offenders as well. It’s all our responsibility to ensure the rights of each child to the maximum extent for a life free of violence and fear but also for the provision of necessary tools for the development of their skills.
